Issue 1 - CONTINENT OF ICE AND SNOW
Antarctica, the coldest, iciest, windiest, and driest continent on the globe, attracts scientists from all over the world. Trek to the South Pole to find out what an International enclave of biologists, geologists, archeologists, atmospheric scientists, and climatologists hope to discover at the bottom of the world. Also discover how they meet the challenges of working in this harsh and hazardous environment. - 25 Minutes.
Issue 2 - ENERGY FROM EARTH'S INTERIOR
An alternative to fossil fuels lies in the heat below the earth's crust. The issue explores how huge granite bodies that are two to three miles under the earth's surface may be used as heating elements for future geothermal power plants. Students will see how these hot rocks are formed, the technology that is used to locate them, and allow them to be mined for heat. The program also offers a basic understanding of earth's interior. 14 Minutes
Issue 3 - MAGNETIC FORCES AT WORK
If it wasn't for magnetism everything would fall apart. This issue explores magnetism's role in our lives. Starting with basic principles, the program explains the magnetic fields of the sun and their relationship to earth's magnetosphere, as well as magnetism's role in technology. Also discussed is its use in generating electricity in motors, computers, medical testing, and in communications equipment. - 14 Minutes
Issue 4 - OUR OZONE BLANKET
A lesson in scientific investigation as well as our planet's atmosphere, this issue shows how scientists determined that CFC's were the cause of a hole discovered in our protective ozone blanket in 1977. The program also shows how scientists, engineers, and manufacturers worked together to prevent further damage to the atmosphere until ozone friendly substitutes for CFC's were developed. - 10 Minutes
